Bamberg, Germany - Little Venice

The picture shows the crane on the top of our boat which lifts down our gangway to allow us to disembark at small docks.

In this case the boat is letting us off at Hassfurt for our tour of Bamberg.  We will go to Bamberg by bus and meet with the boat later as it continues down the river.

Is this Poseidon or Neptune?  The guide didn't know.

The city is small but has a few beautiful canals.

We toured on foot in the city.  We will not return by bus but will meet our boat at the Bamberg dock.

The building on the right was where animals were brought for butchering.  The unwanted remains were just dumped through the floor into the river.

Town Hall is built on an island in the middle of the river.

11th century cathedral.

They called this a stumbling block.  We have seen others in other towns.

Street view.

Loving those tiny windows.

Church tower.

Church gate.

Church grounds.

The church was on the high end of town and provided a view point.

Looking up at the church.

Back at the main square which is our meeting point to go back to the boat.

Bamberg is known for its smoke flavoured beer.  Must say I didn't partake but it sounds yucky!

We board the boat in time for supper and the boat proceeds on its way to Nuremberg.

Tonight and tomorrow morning we are sailing through the 106 mile Main/Danube Canal which stretches from Bamburg on the Main River to Kelheim on the Danube.  This waterway, comprising 16 locks opened in 1992, connecting the North Sea to the Black Sea.
