Passau and Tittling

We docked this morning at Passau, the city of three rivers: the Danube, Ilz and the Inn.

After leaving the boat we proceeded into town up this narrow street.

This was just a cute street corner.

Fourteenth century town hall.

A street scene.

A door!

A building near the Cathedral.

...and another.

What can I say....love doors.

Down at the town center.

Looking down a street toward the town hall.

Looking at the main town from across the river.

I think this is the Bishop's residence.

and the courtyard inside.

You have a larger view of the town from here.

Back at the river side we see the water levels marked for all the floods in the last few hundred years.

They seem to accept the problem well and they have enough warning to be able to move all the stuff from the main floor up to another floor until the water goes down.

An expensive hotel near the dock.

A room in the lobby of that hotel.

This is the artists way.  Wherever the blocks in the center of the walk are painted you can find art shops.

We went back to St. Stephan's church at noon to hear the organ concert.
It is the largest one in Europe.

I must admit I wasn't that impressed.  The music was loud, too loud.  I don't know much about music though so could be just my ignorance.
Five organs and five sets of pipes can be played from the one main organ.

The church was nice though.  Here is a shot of the ceiling.

...and the altar.

We went back on the boat for lunch and then headed out for a Bavarian Forest Museum village spanning 1580 to 1850.
We traveled by bus for the trip of about an hour so got a chance to see a bit of the country side.

Here we are entering Tittling the museum village.

No one lives here now and the buildings are a collection which have been found in the area and moved here.

Some buildings are wood and some are stone.

An outdoor oven.

A tiny church.

A view into the school which is said to be the oldest in Germany.

All the buildings are in a natural setting.

Bee hives made from rope.

This is the oldest piece in the museum.  It is a plague pole whereby they honoured the dead and prayed for the plague to end.

Gotta have windows.

A working water wheel from the past.

The geese were excited by the dog on the other side of the fence.

Back on the boat and on the upper deck catching some rays.  The upper deck has been closed for about a week due to all the low bridges we had to pass under.  All the railings and furniture collapse to the floor and the wheel house goes down into the ship while we clear the bridges.  It takes hours to take it down so for the middle section of the trip they leave it down and the deck is closed.

Looking back at the town as we prepare to leave.

Another shot.

I am trying to show the different colors of the two rivers as they merge here.

So that was Passau.  Tomorrow we will be in Austria. We will cruise through the night and early morning.
