Nuremberg and the Main/Danube Canal

Since last evening we have been cruising through the 106 mile Main-Danube Canal heading to Nuremberg.
Here we are waiting for this ship to leave the lock so we can enter.

Somehow it seems less daunting to enter a full lock and be lowered.

Sometime a bus picture isn't worth the effort but this building is interesting.  It was built by Hitler and modelled on the Colosseum in Rome.  His intention was to use it for enormous gatherings,  but it was a huge undertaking and he ran out of money before it was finished.  The people have left it just as it was, an unusable monument to his madness.

Here is the inside.  It was to be filled with seats.
Right now our bus and many others are in the center and you could add hundreds more.

It has been too many days to remember what this is.

Looking up at the castle.

Looking out across the old town from the castle.

Most towns had half timbered buildings.

The town wall.

This is the sign of a shop which made armour.

Albert Durer was an artist who painted a famous rabbit when all other painters were painting abstracts or people.  This evil rabbit statue was made by another artist who disliked all the fuss about Albert's rabbit picture.  You can see the feet sticking out from under the evil rabbit......Albert Duer meets his fateful end.

Sundial.

This tower is on a well in the square.

Above the man's head there is a gold ring on the iron fence which was put there by a blacksmith apprentice of the man who made the statue.  The apprentice had asked for the blacksmith's daughter's hand in marriage.  The blacksmith said no.  He told the apprentice his work was not good enough to make a living for his daughter.  The apprentice left town that night but before he went he welded the gold ring on the fence and he was never seen again.  The blacksmith inspected the ring and knew who had done it but the weld was so fine you could not see the seam.
It is said that if you rub the ring in a certain way it will bring good fortune.

The pipe is where the water comes out.
.

The church of Our Lady.

A covered bridge in the old town.

There was an optional excursion to the courtroom where the trials were held and museum of the war history that I didn't go to because it meant missing the town tour.

We leave this evening at supper time to head for Regensburg.
